Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming. " Matthew 25:13
Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. " Matthew 24:44
"When will Jesus come?" This is a question many people have. As human beings, we tend to want to know exactly when something would happen. We live in a corporate world that is filled with expectations, timelines, deadlines and results. People look for these all the time. While traveling the only question children seem to have most of the time is, "Are we there yet?" There is the anticipation of something happening, instant gratification and an action. Human mind wants to be in control of things especially when it comes to timing. It is no exception when it comes to the timing of the Lord. We want to know when things will happen. But there are certain things God in His sovereignty has kept away form the knowledge of humans.
Jesus" disciples were curious about this and that is why they asked Jesus to teach him about the end times (Matthew 24:3). Jesus taught them the signs of the end times and what will happen when Jesus would return to the world but did not give a set time when it is bound to happen. Jesus said in Matthew 24:36, "But that day and hour ho one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but my Father only." When the time came for Jesus to go back to His father, disciples asked Him, "Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?" (Acts 1:6-7). Jesus replied and said to them, "It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority." Father God has certain timing in His control that no one knows. The day of the return of the Lord Jesus Christ is one of those timings that God has not revealed to anyone.
Because the timing is not known, many people keep thinking that it is not going to happen at all. Peter writes in II Peter 3:3-4, ""scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation." Just because God has not revealed the timing of the return of the man does mean that it is not happening. Jesus is returning to the earth as the king of kings, Lord of Lords, the victorious commander of the host of angels and it could happen any time. Those who are the enemies of the Lord will see and gnash their teeth and melt away. All eyes will behold Him in His glory. People will run and hide themselves in caves and speak to the mountains, "Fall on us and hide us from the fury of the Lord of hosts". "Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen!" (Revelation 1:7). The confident expectation of Job as he stated in Job 19:25-27, "For I know that my redeemer lives, and He shall stand at last on the earth; And after my skin is destroyed, this I know, that in my flesh I shall see God, whom I shall see for myself, And my eyes shall behold, and not another. How my heart yearns within me!" would be certainly fulfilled on that day. Hallelujah!!
I Thessalonians 5:12 says, ""for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night." The appearing of the Son of Man could happen at a time when many people had not expected. It happens as like when thief comes at night unaware to the master of the house. We need to watch and be ready to meet Him whatever the hour could be. "As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left. Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. (Matthew 24:37-42). These activities show that the coming of the Lord could be anytime, morning when people are in the field, afternoon when women grind with a hand mill or at night when people are in bed. The question is, "Are you ready?"
Prayer: Precious heavenly Father! I submit myself completely today. Prepare me O Lord to be ready for your return. Show me every area of my life where I am not ready so I can be ready. I yield myself to your leading and guidance. In the name of your son and our savior Jesus Christ I pray. Amen.
